Individuals who are not candidates for LASIK Laser Vision
Correction due to a condition known as Presbyopia may be interested
in PRELEX. In Presbyopia, the natural aging process causes the lens
of the eye to harden over time, making it less flexible and therefore
more difficult to focus on near objects. Individuals with Presbyopia
may wear either bifocals or reading (magnifying) glasses. PRELEX is
an option for these individuals.
PRELEX, or Presbyopic Lens Exchange, is a procedure
very similar to cataract surgery, during which the natural lens of
the eye, which has become hardened, is replaced with an artificial
lens. This lens is a multifocal (multiple focus) lens, allowing the
patient to see clearly at both near and far distances, often eliminating
the need for glasses.
Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed procedure
in the United States, and PRELEX is essentially the same procedure.
When it is performed before a cataract exists as a way to reduce or
eliminate the need for bifocals or reading glasses, it is considered
refractive surgery and is called PRELEX. When the procedure is performed
after a cataract exists, it is considered cataract surgery.
