The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently approved the Advanced CustomVue™ Monovision LASIK procedure, the first wavefront-guided laser vision correction procedure for treatment of nearsighted presbyopic patients, with and without astigmatism. The Kokomo Eye Center is among the fist practices in Indiana to offer the Advanced CustomVue™ Monovision Procedure.
Presbyopia is an age-related condition in which the lens of the eye loses flexibility, therefore
diminishing the ability to focus on objects up close. Most people are affected by presbyopia and
will notice changes beginning in their 40s. Advanced Medical Optics, the manufacturer of the
Advanced CustomVue™ LASIK technologies, estimates that nearly a third of the 90 million Americans
affected by presbyopia could benefit from the procedure.
The Advanced CustomVue™ LASIK Monovision procedure can improve both near and distance vision by correcting the dominant eye for distance vision, and the less dominant eye for near vision. The brain learns to adjust to the difference in perception.
Using the combined industry-leading technologies of the VISX Star S4 IR® eximer laser, WaveScan Wavefront® and Iris Registration™ systems, the Advanced CustomVue™ LASIK Monovision procedure first creates a map, by scanning the human eye and capturing a “fingerprint” that is 25 times more precise than what was previously measurable by standard methods for glasses and contacts, and then custom-corrects nearsightedness in the dominant eye, and under-correcting in the other eye. The result is a reduced dependency on reading glasses and contact lenses.
The FDA bases its approval on the results of clinical trials, which revealed clear benefits of the procedure. The trials showed that after six months after being with the Advanced CustomVue™ LASIK Monovision procedure, 100% of patients achieved 20/40 or better vision at both distance and near and more than 96% of patients decreased their use of corrective lenses. After 12 months following the procedure, more than 98% of patients said they would have the Advanced CustomVue™ LASIK Monovision procedure again.
