What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a condition in which pressure created
by the fluid in one or both eyes builds up to an abnormally high level.
When this pressure remains elevated over a period of time, damage
occurs to the delicate visual structures. Left untreated, blindness
often results.

Symptoms
There are no warning symptoms until late in the
disease when side vision is lost. The loss of vision narrows so gradually
that it often goes unnoticed until it's too late to restore normal
vision. Glaucoma tends to be hereditary, and if either of your parents
or grandparents had it, you have a higher than average chance of developing
the disease.

Treatment
Fortunately, there is something you can do to
protect your eyesight. Glaucoma can't be cured, but with regular visits
to your doctor and the use of prescribed medications, it can be controlled.
The most common treatment for glaucoma is eyedrops to lower the pressure.
If the pressure does not decrease treatment may invlove laser treatment
or laser surgery which opens the drainage system in the eye so fluid
will flow freely. Early detection and treatment are the only ways
to prevent permanent vision loss.
