Blepharoplasty (Upper and/or Lower Eyelid Surgery)
What is a blepharoplasty?
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, corrects sagging upper eyelids or the “bags” that form
directly under the eyes by removing or repositioning excess fat and skin. The eyelids may
droop over the eyes for various reasons, most commonly due to weakened eyelid muscles,
prolapsed fat pads and excess skin. This may block part of your peripheral vision or be
cosmetically bothersome. Ptosis repair and
blepharoplasty surgeries are performed to elevate the upper lids (and correspondingly,
lower the lower lids), to widen the exposure of the eyes, restore peripheral vision,
and cosmetically improve appearance. Upper eyelid surgery is usually made through an
incision of the natural lid crease, to best hide the scar. If there is no upper lid
crease, a crease may be surgically created. Lower lid surgery is usually made through
a small incision on the pink portion of the eyelid. Excess skin will be removed or
repositioned. Sutures are used to close the skin incisions and are usually removed
within the first postoperative week. During the first week, antibiotic is applied to
the eyelids and strenuous activity should be minimized. Discomfort is usually minimal
after surgery. Blepharoplasty surgery can provide both cosmetic and functional improvement
with minimal risk of serious problems. This procedure is often combined with browlifts,
ptosis repair and other procedures. Blepharoplasty is typically performed under local
anesthesia with sedative at one of our AAAHC accredited Surgicenters. The result is a
natural, more youthful rejuvenation of the eyelids.
Estimated Cost (per eye, does not include anesthesia)
